BMW Golf Cup World Final Countdown – 2 Weeks to Go

You may have read already in the About Me section of my blog that the motivation to really hit the golf game hard this winter came from doing well in the BMW Golf Cup in 2016 and qualififying to represent the UK for BMW at the World Final in Dubai.  You can see all of the information on the official BMW Golf Cup World Final website:

BMW Gold Cup Website

Two weeks today the proceedings for the weeks worth of golf will be kicking off so to share in that excitement with you guys I wanted to run through with you what I have in store.  Of course you can contact me to give me any advice if you have played the course and keep on top of how I am doing through this site and the social medias for Twenty2Scratch.  Today I will just give you the itinerary then next weekend I will be letting you know what I am thinking strategy wise on how to approach it.  All advise is welcome as I haven’t played much golf out there yet in the Middle East.

Saturday 4th March

Fly out to Dubai on the A380, business class of course all courtesy of the sponsor BMW.  Land and get taken to the Montgomerie Hotel in Dubai.   Evening of leisure staying at Monty’s hotel on him.

Sunday 5th March

The Montgomerie

Tee off for 18 holes with Colin Montgomerie himself around his course in Dubai.  This will be a 4 ball including the low handicap winner from the UK and the Ladies Winner.  I qualfied by being the high (13+) handicapper from St. Andrews.  This will be a relaxed fun day to losen off from the flight, get a feel for the quick greens in Dubai compared to February greens in England.

Following the golf we are transferring to the main hosting hotel – The Waldorf Astoria – for a player briefing with with all the players from all over the world competing in the World Final.  I am imagining it to be like a big world cup of bandits.

Monday 6th March

Today is the practice round on the actual tournament track.  All I know so far its one of the Emirates courses.  They haven’t said which one yet as I suppose its up to the organiser close to the time to go with either.  So a chance to take it all in, step up the preparation, get a first look at the greens, the hazards and get thinking on how best to approach each hole tactically knowing my own strengths and weaknesses.

There is evening entertainment put on each night by the hosts and BMW.  On the Monday night they simply have called it…..Arabian Experience.   Could be anything.

Tuesday 7th March – Thursday 9th March

Let competition begin!   The competition itself will be a team based competition and an individual one.  All based on full handicap stapleford scoring where the winner of each single catergory and team competition will be whoever has the most points in total over three rounds of golf.  So very much like a PGA Tour Event.   There is no cut though so fingers crossed everyone gets to play 3 rounds and not have a day off on the Final Day if you have played poorly!

The evening entertainment through the week includes a Team UK night out at a seafood restaurant, a beach party and the final night awards presentation is a black tie event where Colin Montgomerie hosts the night and gives out awards at a gala dinner.

Friday 10th March

Fly home on the big old A380 with hopefully an extra trophy or two in the luggage hold!

Finally to get more of a feel for what it could be like, I checked out the World Final video from 2014 which was held in Sydney Australia.  Gets you pretty excited.

  1. Hi

    Love the blog.

Having played both the Emirates and Montgomerie, I’m sure you’ll really enjoy these courses, as they are amazing.

A word of warning at the Montgomerie, don’t be tempted to drive a buggy into the massive bunkers to get to your ball. Playing golf in 30 degrees is hard enough, pushing a stranded buggy out of sand makes you sweat like never before – believe me!!!

In case you’re interested, the image you have of the Emitates golf club for March 6th, is in fact Dubai Creek Golf and Yacht Club.

Best of luck, and looking forward to seeing how you get on.

    T
